Is Pineapple Good For Dogs? When it is Bad? What are the Benefits of it

Recently, I investigated with my dog, Jack, about ‘can dogs eat pineapple or not.’ During this process, a part of my research included a question which was,  ‘is pineapple good for dogs?’.

Pineapple is indeed, very safe and beneficial for dogs. Pineapple is proven to be a healthy snack for dogs because it is packed with multiple nutrients for an improved immune and metabolic system. It can help to treat many health issues such as constipation, inflammation, coprophagia, etc. It makes them stronger and helps in the quick recovery of injuries.

I had previously written a blog about the entire procedure and the events related to this investigation regarding dogs eating pineapple.

The experience of my dog munching away pineapple chunks and the subsequent visit to the vet got me all the answers about the advantages of pineapples.

Therefore, I decided to write a separate article to explain  ‘is pineapple good for dogs or not.’

Every dog needs a healthy and balanced diet, just like humans do. They require a fixed amount of carbohydrates, fats, fiber, protein, water, minerals, and vitamins.

That is why fruits and vegetables must be a part of a dog’s diet to cover up for the nutrients which they cannot get through their day to day meals.

So, I wondered in what ways a pineapple can help to benefit the health of a dog and if there are any side effects for it.

Fortunately, Jack showed no signs of allergic reactions to pineapple, such as diarrhea or vomiting. So it further cemented the fact that pineapple is not harmful to dogs. However, there are some precautionary measures to ensure their benefits.

If pineapple is given to dogs on alternate days with fixed and appropriate proportions, then it can provide multiple benefits to the dog.

Why Is Pineapple Good For Dogs?

So I briefly touched upon the reasons which make pineapple suitable for dogs in my recent blog. Pineapple is a juicy and delicious fruit containing 80% of water which provides an instant way to hydrate your dog.

It is loaded with a list of long of nutrients such as fiber, manganese, vitamins, carbs, and special enzymes. However, they are most abundant in vitamin C and manganese, each having 131% and 76% of the daily recommendations, respectively.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient required by the body to ensure optimum growth and development while promoting the absorption of iron from the daily diet.

Manganese, on the other hand, is a natural mineral which has antioxidants properties that encourage a healthy immune system and improves growth.

Pineapples also contain other antioxidants such as phenolic acids which reduces the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, cancers, and heart disease.

The special enzymes in pineapple include Bromelain, which is a digestive enzyme. It helps to break down protein and improve the bowel movements. Therefore, it helps to reduce constipation.

Bromelain has anti-inflammatory properties as well, which can boost the healing and recovery process of minor injuries and bruises.

Moreover, every 165gm of pineapple contains 2.3 grams of fiber. Dietary fiber is essential to ensure a healthy digestive system.

Other than the nutrients it contains, pineapple can be a great treat for dogs because it has a blend of sweet and tangy taste. You can easily add it into the diet of the dogs as you can make delicious treats from pineapple.

Pineapple Benefits For Dogs:

So, every nutrient mentioned above contributes to a healthy lifestyle for dogs in several ways. Pineapple if given as snacks in fixed proportions can bring about many health benefits to dogs.

The high amounts of Vitamin C in pineapple is an excellent deal for older dogs because aging dogs cannot produce their own Vitamin C. Therefore, pineapple serves as a supplementary source of Vitamin C for old dogs.

On the other hand, vitamin B6 and B1 help to provide extra energy to the dogs.

A dog’s staple diet mainly consists of abundant meat proteins, which is often difficult to digest. It often results in hard poop or difficulty in excretion for dogs.

Bromelain, therefore, helps to digest all the dense food and promotes a healthy digestive system. Besides, fiber also plays a vital role to enhance the digestive system and makes intestines healthy.

Therefore, it is an excellent food for dogs who have constipation issues.

Playful and active dogs are more prone to getting injured and bruised. With the anti-inflammatory properties of Bromelain, pineapple helps to reduce swelling and pain from injuries. It also promotes quick recovery of the wounds, which prevents from contracting other infections.

Manganese is an essential mineral because it helps to activate other enzymes in the body which are required for optimum metabolism. It also helps to make the bones and joints stronger.

Conclusion:

With reference to the previous article and these details, you can conclude that pineapple can be very healthy for dogs if they are fresh, not canned pineapples.

It provides a range of benefits which makes dogs more healthy and strong. So, do not forget to add pineapple into the diet of your dog to gain all these health benefits.

However, it is to be noted that, not all dogs have the tolerance to pineapples so it should not be forced in their diet. Moreover, if dogs show any signs of allergy or adverse reaction to pineapple, then it should be discontinued immediately.
